US 34 ABC Bridge over Republican River

Wray, Colorado

Tsiouvaras Simmons Holderness completed the replacement of this historic 4-span timber bridge while addressing numerous design and construction challenges, including irrigation structures, an adjacent railroad, and a potential long-term 70-mile detour. To address these challenges, TSH developed a solution to construct the bridge adjacent to the existing bridge above the irrigation structures and roll the bridge into place during a two-day road closure. TSH designers created project documents in A + B format, encouraging the contractor to minimize the construction schedule. This construction method shortened the detour from weeks to days, eliminating the need for either a costly near-site detour or a 70-mile detour. Close coordination with the many stakeholders on this project resulted in the road opening 24 hours ahead of schedule and the contractor coming in nearly 11% below the second lowest bidder with minimal impact to the traveling public.
