C-470/Santa Fe Flyover Design-Build

Littleton, Colorado

Tsiouvaras Simmons Holderness teamed with Edward Kraemer & Sons to redesign a new flyover to provide a connection between southbound Santa Fe Drive and eastbound C-470 in Littleton, Colorado. This work was awarded under a design-build format with CDOT’s Alternate Bridge Design and Construction special provision. The new flyover bridge spans over Santa Fe Drive (US 85), C-470, Wolhurst, a UPRR bridge, and a BNSF bridge. The bridge consists of 12 spans with a total length of 1,728 feet and was constructed on a 900-foot horizontal radius. The design utilized curved precast U-girders and an innovative precast pier cap design to minimize impacts to the roadways and railroads below and to reduce construction cost. The use of precast piers allowed the project to be completed 5 months ahead of schedule and reduced night work from 25 nights to only 5.

  • Prime for $17.2M project was bid $1M under the engineers’ estimate
  • Innovative use of precast pier caps enabled project to be completed 5 months ahead of schedule
