Grand Avenue Bridge Replacement

Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Tsiouvaras Simmons Holderness is leading the engineering and is a subconsultant to Jacobs Engineering for the replacement of the Grand Avenue bridge in downtown Glenwood Springs, CO. TSH’s role includes project management, bridge and structural design, roadway alternatives, hydrology, traffic, environmental assessment, and post-design services. The team looked at almost every feasible alignment to connect the Hot Springs Pool area north of the Colorado River to downtown Glenwood Springs south of the River. Besides the existing alignment, alternative single-bridge alignments and two-bridge “couplets” were considered because they could help with phasing construction, improve traffic operations, and reducing or changing project impacts. TSH developed multiple alternative designs for the I-70 Exit 116 area, with the selected design being a unique combination of roundabout, signals, and pedestrian underpass. The selected roadway alternative with a new bridge alignment requires modifications to intersections on SH 82 and local access intersections.

  • New direct connection of Grand Avenue/ SH 82 with I-70
  • New 6th Street roundabout for local traffic connection
