This multi-modal project included preliminary and final design for the new pedestrian underpass on Regent Drive. The project is located in the middle of the historic University of Colorado Boulder campus, which required several context sensitive approaches to meet the engineering challenges while maintaining the historic character of the University. The design team obtained approval from the city of Boulder, the University Design Review Board and CDOT. The project consisted of eliminating pedestrian and bicycle conflicts with vehicular traffic on Regent Drive while maintaining access to Fiske Planetarium and allowing for the safe and efficient loading and unloading of buses at the planetarium.
Some of the design challenges included raising Regent Drive to allow for the pedestrian underpass while maintaining the at-grade access to Fiske Planetarium and minimizing the visual impacts of the elevated roadway. To accomplish this TSH provided a design that softened the appearance of the raised roadway with retaining walls, planters, vegetation and other architectural elements.
